Head coach

Volunteering as a head coach in the Dolphins Flag Football League is an opportunity to make a meaningful impact while gaining personal and professional rewards. As a head coach, you play a vital role in shaping young athletes by teaching fundamental football skills, teamwork, leadership, and sportsmanship in a positive, structured environment.

For volunteers, the experience offers the chance to give back to the community, build leadership and communication skills, stay active, and create lasting relationships with players, families, and fellow coaches.

For the kids, the benefits are equally powerful—they gain confidence, develop discipline, learn how to work as part of a team, and enjoy a safe, inclusive environment that emphasizes fun and growth.

Head coaches are responsible for organizing practices, leading game-day activities, ensuring player safety, fostering a respectful and encouraging team culture, and communicating effectively with parents and league staff. Ultimately, serving as a head coach is about creating a memorable and positive experience that helps young athletes grow both on and off the field.

    • Head coaches are responsible for:
      Planning and leading practices

    • Teaching fundamental skills and game strategy

    • Managing game-day operations and player rotations

    • Ensuring a safe and positive environment

    • Promoting sportsmanship and teamwork

    • Communicating with parents and league officials

  • No prior coaching experience is required. While knowledge of flag football is helpful, the league provides resources, guidance, and support to ensure you feel confident leading your team. Enthusiasm, patience, and a positive attitude are the most important qualities.

  • Time commitments typically include :

    • recreational divisions: 1 hour practice before your game and 1 hour game per week

    • competitive divisions: 1 hour practice before your game and 1 hour game. Optional practices are allowed during the week. These can not be made mandatory and these practices are not considered a part of the DFFL program.

    • Planning and communication outside of scheduled activities. Exact schedules vary by division

  • The league provides:

    • Coaching guidelines and resources

    • Practice plans and drills

    • Rules and league structure

    • Ongoing communication and support from staff

  • Age groups vary by division within the league. You’ll be matched with a group that aligns with your comfort level and league needs.

    • A background check

    • Fingerprints

    • Concussion Certification

    • Code of Conduct Agreement

Referees are responsible for understanding league rules, making clear and unbiased calls, communicating effectively with coaches and players, and maintaining control of the game in a positive and professional manner. This role is essential to creating a structured and enjoyable experience for everyone involved.

      Enforcing league rules and regulations

    • Managing the flow and pace of games

    • Making fair and unbiased calls

    • Communicating clearly with coaches and players

    • Maintaining a safe, respectful game environment

  • No prior refereeing experience is required. The league provides rules, guidance, and support to help you succeed. A willingness to learn and be consistent is more important than experience.

  • Time commitments typically include :

    • showing up 15 minutes before your first game

    • working assigned games (each game is an hour)

    • preseason workshop(s)

  • The league provides rules, expectations, and ongoing support (instructional videos, zoom & in person meetings, etc) from staff to ensure you feel confident throughout the season.

  • Age groups vary by division within the league. You’ll be matched with a group that aligns with your comfort level and league needs. From 6U to 14U.

  • Referees are expected to remain calm, professional, and respectful. Clear communication and confidence help manage disagreements while keeping the focus on the game and the players’ experience.

Volunteering as on-site staff in the Dolphins Flag Football League is a great way to support the overall game-day experience and ensure everything runs smoothly behind the scenes.

On-site staff plays a key role in creating a safe, organized, and welcoming environment for players, coaches, referees, and families.

Responsibilities may include setting up and breaking down fields, assisting with check-in and registration, supporting game operations, monitoring safety, and helping address questions or needs throughout the event.

For volunteers, this role offers a hands-on opportunity to be part of the action, build teamwork and problem-solving skills, and contribute to a positive community experience. For the kids and families, having reliable onsite staff ensures a well-organized, enjoyable environment where the focus can remain on playing, learning, and having fun.

  • No experience is required. The league provides guidance and direction for all tasks. A positive attitude, reliability, and willingness to help are the most important qualities.

    • Onsite staff may be responsible for assisting with check-in and registration

Due to updated state requirements effective July 2026, all volunteers with direct contact with youth athletes must complete the required Level 2 background screening, including fingerprinting, prior to coaching.

Before the season begins, all volunteer coaches must complete required training, including Concussion Certification, attend the Coaches & Officials Meeting, and review the NFL FLAG Official Rulebook and Coach’s Code of Conduct.
