Coach & Volunteer Background Screening Policy

Dolphins Flag Football League, NFL FLAG, and Flag Universal, Inc. are committed to providing a safe, positive, and supportive environment for all participants. The safety of our athletes is our highest priority, and we have established a comprehensive screening process for all coaches, volunteers, and staff who work directly with youth athletes.

Required Background Screening

Effective July 2026, updated state requirements require all volunteers who have direct contact with youth athletes to complete an enhanced Level 2 background screening, including fingerprinting, before being approved to participate as a coach or staff member.

Background screening is required for all volunteer Head Coaches, Assistant Coaches, and staff who have access to or direct contact with athletes under the age of 18 during scheduled practices and games.

Dolphins Flag Football League and NFL FLAG partner with CheckR, Inc. to complete required background screenings. CheckR is a leading background screening provider specializing in volunteer and youth sports organizations. Screening may include:

  • National criminal database search

  • National sex offender registry check

  • Social Security number identity verification

  • Address history verification

  • Criminal record verification and review

Volunteers do not need to complete a background check independently. Once a Volunteer Interest Form has been submitted and a coach is assigned to a team, instructions for completing the required Level 2 screening and fingerprinting process will be provided directly.

Why Background Screening Is Required

Background screening helps us:

  1. Promote a safe and positive environment where youth athletes can learn, compete, and enjoy the sport of flag football.

  2. Provide confidence to families that appropriate safety measures are in place when allowing their child to participate.

  3. Support responsible risk management practices through a thorough screening process.

Please note: Background screening is a preventative safety measure and is not intended to serve as a profiling tool. While screening helps identify potential risks, no screening process can guarantee that inappropriate behavior or incidents will never occur.

What Volunteers Can Expect

All approved team staff members who have access to youth athletes must:

  • Complete the required Level 2 background screening and fingerprinting process.

  • Provide required identification information, including full legal name, date of birth, and Social Security number.

  • Review and acknowledge the Coaches Code of Conduct and applicable league policies.

  • Complete all required safety training before participation.

  • Coaches will not receive final roster access, coaching materials, or team assignments until all required screening requirements are completed and approved.
