Frequently Asked Questions

We have compiled a list of frequently asked questions that we hope you find helpful as you continue your journey with us this season.

Q: Who can participate?
A:
Participants from any city are welcome to register at any of our locations. Our Development Leagues are open to boys and girls aged 4 (as of the registration deadline) through 8th grade, up to 14 years of age. Additionally, the Touchdown for Tots program is specifically designed for players in Pre-K and Kindergarten, serving as an introduction to flag football.

Q: How do I register?
A:
All registrations are completed online through our website. Families must create an account and verify a valid email address.

Q: What do I get for my registration fee?
A:
Your registration fee includes a seven-week season with practices, access to well-maintained fields, certified officials, an NFL FLAG reversible team jersey, a flag belt and flags, an interactive website, organized administration, and plenty of FUN for you and your child!

Q: My child has never played before. Is that okay?
A:
Absolutely! Our Development program, guided by NFL FLAG’s no-contact rule and team-focused environment, is perfect for kids to learn the fundamentals of football, develop skills, and most importantly, have fun!

Q: How much playing time can my child expect?
A:
Our Development Leagues focus on participation, fun, and skill development. Coaches are encouraged to distribute playing time fairly and equally among all team members, ensuring every player has an equal opportunity to be on the field.

Q: Does the league supply uniforms?
A:
Every Flag Football player in our Developmental program will receive an NFL FLAG team jersey and a flag belt to keep as part of their registration. Shorts or pants are not provided by the league and should be pocket-free to ensure safety when pulling flags.

Q: Do all flag football players need mouthpieces?
A:
Yes, it is mandatory for all players to wear a mouthpiece during all practices and games. Mouthguards will be available for purchase at league locations during games, with payment accepted via Zelle.

Q: How are individual players placed on teams?
A:
This league is designed to let friends play together. Individual players are placed on teams based on a combination of factors, including grade level/age, buddy or coach requests, and skill level, in no particular order.

Q: Are team registrations allowed?
A:
No, team registrations are not allowed for the Developmental program. This policy ensures parity within the league and prevents team stacking. The buddy request system is designed for children to request placement on a team with one or two friends, not for coaches to recruit multiple players or create their own teams.

Q: How many players are on a team?
A:
Most teams typically consist of 10 to 11 players per season, although some teams may have fewer players depending on the number registered in each age division.

Q: Can the team have additional practices during the week?
A:
No. Extra practices outside the designated one-hour session on game day are not permitted, as families have committed to a schedule of one practice and one game per week.

Q: Who are the coaches?
A:
Volunteer coaching positions are typically filled by parents, relatives, or friends of the players on the team. After teams are formed, parents or family members are recruited to coach their child’s team. Training is provided for all volunteers, and no prior experience is required. If a coach cannot be secured for a team, the team may be disbanded, and registration fees will be refunded.

Q: What qualifications are needed to be a coach?
A:
Coaching experience is not required prior to volunteering. All coaches must pass a background check, attend a mandatory coaches meeting and training session, and complete concussion training.

Q: How many volunteer coaches will each team have?
A:
Teams may have up to two volunteers as part of the coaching staff. The staff can include a Head Coach, an Assistant Coach, or a Team Manager. If a Head Coach is not designated, two Assistant Coaches can work together to form a complete coaching staff.

Q: What are the responsibilities of the volunteer coaches?
A:
Head Coach: This role takes on the leadership responsibilities for the coaching staff, providing overall guidance and direction for the team.
Assistant Coach: This role supports the Head Coach or works alongside another Co-Coach throughout the season, assisting in coaching duties and team management.
Team Manager: This role supports the coaching staff by handling tasks such as family communications, organizing snack schedules, managing players on the sidelines, and providing general assistance to the team.

Q: Who are the officials, and are they qualified?
A:
Many of our referees are certified by the High School Athletic Association, the same professionals who officiate local high school games. They are thoroughly trained, licensed, insured, and certified through the state. Their expertise ensures a well-officiated and fair game for both teams.

Q: Are there playoffs?
A:
Yes, playoffs are offered for the Madden Divisions only (4th grade and up) in the Development Leagues. The top four teams in each Madden division will compete in playoffs during the final week of the season. The top two teams will then play an additional game on the same day for the Championship. Divisions for 3rd grade and under do not have playoffs but will still participate in a game during the final week of the season.

Q: What types of awards are given?
A:
Players in the Lombardi and Shula Divisions will each receive an individual participation award. In the Madden Divisions, awards are reserved for the top two teams overall.
